Last month, I spent two weeks at the Oregon State Fair, watching FFA members from all over the state compete, care for their animals, and share their passion with the public. From early mornings in the barns to late evenings in the show ring, it was inspiring to see their commitment in action.
Walking through the livestock barns and exhibit halls, it was clear how much effort these members had invested. From grooming their animals before a show to answering questions from fairgoers, FFA members represented the future of agriculture with pride and professionalism. Many had been preparing all year for this moment, and their enthusiasm was contagious.
Conversations with members were just as meaningful as watching them in the ring. They spoke not only about their animals and projects, but also about leadership, teamwork, and the lessons they’ve learned along the way. Whether it was waking up before sunrise to feed, balancing schoolwork with responsibilities at home, or serving in leadership roles within their chapters, their stories reflected a remarkable level of dedication.
It was also amazing to witness the supportive community behind these students. Families, advisors, and alumni filled the stands, cheering them on during competitions and celebrating both big wins and small milestones. It was a reminder that agriculture is about more than just hard work—it’s about connection, mentorship, and carrying traditions forward.
The greatest lesson I took away from this experience is that leadership doesn’t always come from a title or a stage—it often shows up in the quiet moments of hard work, humility, and perseverance. Watching members lead by example reminded me that the values we practice each day speak louder than words.
As you begin the new school year, I encourage you to remember that you don’t need a title or position to make a difference and lead those around you. Leadership is not defined by recognition—it’s defined by responsibility, consistency, and character. Whether you’re mentoring a peer, helping at home, or simply showing kindness in your daily interactions, you are shaping the world around you.
So step forward with confidence. Lead with integrity. And know that even the smallest actions, done with purpose, can leave a lasting impact. Let this be the year you lead not because you have to—but because you choose to.
