Within the past few months of being an Oregon FFA State Officer I’ve experienced some of the happiest moments of my life. From getting installed into office at state convention, connecting with district officers at ODOT to late-night talks and unforgettable moments with my teammates, I’ve felt deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve.
At first, I thought happiness was the goal, that if I was happy, I must be doing something right. But as I reflected on this season, I remembered a conversation I had with one of my mentors, Mrs. Johnson. We were talking about life and meaning when she asked, “Lydia, do you know the difference between happiness and joy?” At the time, I didn’t. I had always seen them as the same. Now I understand.
Happiness is based on moments, winning an award, spending time with friends, and feeling seen and appreciated. These moments matter, but they’re fleeting. Joy is different. Joy is lasting, it’s a choice. It’s waking up on the hard days and choosing to stay positive. It’s leaning on your faith, your people, and your purpose even when things don’t go your way. Over these past few months, I’ve learned that true joy runs deeper than a smile. It’s been modeled by my family, mentors, teammates, and the quiet reminders that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be, even when it’s tough.
I’m looking forward to the months ahead, attending leadership camps, traveling to Washington, D.C., for the National FFA State Officer Summit, and visiting businesses and industries. But more than anything, I’m excited for every high and low, because I know with a joyful mindset, it will all have purpose.
So, Oregon FFA, here’s my challenge to you: Stop chasing happiness. Start choosing joy. Joy that lasts. Joy that strengthens. Joy that carries you through every valley and every victory. Count it all joy.
James 1:2 “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds”
With joy,
Lydia Cruikshank
